  1. My network of co-workers, former co-workers, friends, and acquaintances is a critical resource for career-related resources. They provide me with job openings, current trends, and local information that is useful for me in decision making. Also, my network is the best source for job opportunities giving me an advantage versus other applicants. I like this resource because it is localized and potential job opportunities are relevant to my career search.
  2. Various career sites are another career-related resource that I utilize frequently. Sites such as monster.com and hotjobs.com show various listings with other companies for similar positions. I utilize this information to see what skills are required or new for such positions. Also, if applicable I will apply for job opportunities on these websites. I like this resource because it is easy to research every day and doesn’t take much time and effort.
  3. Mentors are an important resource because they provide me with guidance regarding career questions I have and give me direction for the long-term. My dad is my mentor since he has worked in accounting and finance for over 40 years and became an executive. He’s suggested I continue my education after undergrad and I completed my MBA and CPA. Also, he provides advice on what skills to update and what I should be focusing on. I like this resource because there is no cost and provides me with an experienced person who can help me with decision making.
  4. News reporting is another resource that I use for career-related decision making. Last year, I worked for a community bank and saw the trend of financial companies having a hard time. I left the bank for a technology company which turned out to be good timing. I was able to use the news as a resource in providing me insight on the particular industry I was in and made a decision about it. I like this resource because it provides me with the macroeconomic factors that affect my career that I can read about readily.
  5. Government long term statistics and trends is another resource. For example, I utilized the Bureau of Labor Statistics website to gather information on three positions described. This website has detail such as average salaries, expected growth rates, and what skills are needed for these positions. Specifically, for Finance Manager I know whether there is growth and what I need to succeed in my career. I like this resource because it contains macro level detail on positions instead of localized so I know from the high level how well positioned this career is.
