1) The IMDB (Internet Movie Database) – It’s hard to emphasize how important a resource this is; I believe financial success is secondary to artistic success, and the latter can only be achieved through a commitment to the culture of what you’re doing. The IMDB has so much information on history, theory, statistics and trivia that I find it invaluable. Furthermore it has entire sections of the site devoted to networking, asking questions to professional filmmakers, and the publication of short independent films.

2) An acquaintance of mine from my church is a professional video editor, so there’s a plug into the industry.

3) Rebel without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker With $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player – A book by Robert Rodriguez which is aimed at teaching young film fans how to make and distribute movies on a small budget. He also talks about film technique.

4) HITCHCOCK By TRUFFAUT. The Definitive Study of Alfred Hitchcock By Francois Truffaut. Revised Edition. – The most sacred book in film literature, in which the former interviews the latter for over 300 pages. It’s an unbelievable, invaluable resource to any serious filmmaker.

5) Making Movies – A book written by Sidney Lumet in 1995; it’s the most comprehensive look at the process of filmmaking, from conception to release, that I’ve ever come across. It ranges from style to content, technique to business and negotiation skills, inspiration to funding, and has more common sense in it than you would expect from a book as long as it is.
