[Thanks to PP for sharing her career action plan report, which was a culminating project for a college career planning class.]

It’s important to plan out your future career goals and endeavors; it gives you a sense of motivation and clear sense of direction as well. In order to get where you want to go, you have to know where you want to go, what you want to get, and how your going to get it.

billboardMy short-term goals to achieve my advertising career is to build up my resume, and gain knowledge in the field both through hands on training and experiences as well as through classes and career building programs.  I would like to gain a strong understanding for the field and become an expertise in the marketing and creative aspect of advertising.

As for the long term goals I would like to procure a career at TBWA Chiat Day, an elite advertising agency catering to only the most popular and prestigious companies such as Apple, Gatorade, Pepsi, Activision and many others.  I would also like to accomplish certain mental attributes such as contentment and happiness, success and the here and now mind set.  When I set my mind to something I achieve it to the fullest, I’m not going to be just another worker in a big corporation I plan on being the boss, the leader and the one on top.

I came upon these goals by taking it step by step and breaking down all the requirements it takes to be an advertising executive. Then I plan on working my way up the ladder to the top. First you need to learn about the field and gradually build work experience and then start applying everything you learned to the professional world.

No doubt I wouldn’t be able to get where I need to go without resources. That’s why I depend on people and connections to get me to my destination. My favorite resource is definitely people and networking with others that might be able to help me out. I never realized this but what’s actually helped me out a lot is the thought that, “You can always ask, and they can always say no.” And if they do deal with it, go on to the next connection. You can’t sit behind a screen and expect to get connections; no impression is stronger than those made in person. My goals really reflect who I am personally because I’m always a leader, and I also like to come up with new ways to entertain people with advertisements and new ideas.

“After a hurricane comes a rainbow.” With anything you have to pay your dues. I feel like in the beginning I might be lacking in the financial department but once you establish yourself you start gaining financial confidence and stability.

Also you have to figure out what sets you apart from the other 200 or 300 applicants. I hate to say it but you basically have to sell yourself, what makes you different? What are your strengths and how can you make them want you? Never pass up any opportunities to enhance your career. Always stay open minded. Presently I can stay focused and stay on track. In about a year I can start taking all the classes I need to take in order to better my career. After that I can transfer over to a UC or private school and study communications, and when I graduate I can apply to the agency of my choice. Then once I get my foot in the door and start making my way up I will be making over 100,000 dollars a year.

I hadn’t really given the thought of exactly what I was going to do, but sitting down and writing out really cleared up what I need to achieve in order to accomplish my goals.

I also realized I need to start building my work resume and also gaining references. I feel more motivated than before especially since now that I know what I’m doing I get to move away from my parent’s house even quicker. I feel a lot more confident than when I first started at this college and look forward to taking a step forward towards my goal.

Overall I felt like all the exercises helped establish what I want to do and also how I can achieve it. If I were to change one thing it would be to do some more hands on training. Maybe a field trip to a workshop, or a career of interest. I really look forward to continuing my education and one day being one of the best advertisement executives out there.
