// [Thanks to Kay Brown for sharing her list of favorite resources for administrative assistants.] Top Ten Career Resources for Administrative Assistants 1. http://www.iaap-hq.org/ I discovered this resource from a career planning text book. This is the site for International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) and where the Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) and Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) professional certifications are given after an exam is taken. They offer courses and educational events. It offers publications to help keep up to date on the job. You can join also to be part of a local chapter, gain more education, and be part of a community. All the rest of the below resources I found from recent research. 2. http://www.administrative-assistant.net/ This site was a small collection of useful articles, sample resumes, information about what to expect, what you can earn, etc. Tamara, the author created the site to help administrative assistants have some information as she didn’t have any resources when she started. Her skills page and her job description page are particularly useful as it gave a concise list of what skills you need and some tips on how to acquire them. It is a favorite as it wasn’t overwhelming in [...]

// [Thanks to Sam for sharing his list of favorite resources for musicians.] 1. http://education-portal.com/top_ten_music_colleges.html That site is a list on the top music colleges in the country. It lists the schools from best to worst, giving the contact info and the list of majors offered. It also gives the average salary for the related careers. And I found interesting that it doesn’t even list musicians/performers on the graph of average salaries. 2. http://www.musicmates.com/ That site lets you find a band or people to play music with for a career. It has options for people seeking bands, bands seeking people, and even trying to find teaching positions. 3. http://www.musicianscontact.com/ This site is similar to the number 2 site in the sense that it also lets u search for musicians to play with or post an ad requesting a position. The difference with this site is that its much more general and simple. So here you search for musicians in general rather than specifically being in a band. 4. http://www.gigfinder.com/ This site is more like a social network site, you set up an account that has your personal info. Then you can post or reply to posts about music gigs. Its [...]

// [Thanks to PP for sharing her career action plan report, which was a culminating project for a college career planning class.] It’s important to plan out your future career goals and endeavors; it gives you a sense of motivation and clear sense of direction as well. In order to get where you want to go, you have to know where you want to go, what you want to get, and how your going to get it. My short-term goals to achieve my advertising career is to build up my resume, and gain knowledge in the field both through hands on training and experiences as well as through classes and career building programs. I would like to gain a strong understanding for the field and become an expertise in the marketing and creative aspect of advertising. As for the long term goals I would like to procure a career at TBWA Chiat Day, an elite advertising agency catering to only the most popular and prestigious companies such as Apple, Gatorade, Pepsi, Activision and many others. I would also like to accomplish certain mental attributes such as contentment and happiness, success and the here and now mind set. When I set [...]

// [Thanks to JW for sharing her informational interview regarding the environmental science major.] After taking a couple of comprehensive, career-related assessments, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to try a major in either psychology or environmental science. After much thinking, I have decided that I would like to try to double major in the two subjects. Since I had already begun my psychology minor at my previous university, I decided that I wanted to learn more about environmental science. Luckily, I found out that a fellow teammate who I practice with is a grad student at Stanford University and is an environmental science major. While driving to a race one weekend, I ended up in the same carpool as her and took the opportunity to ask her a couple of questions about her major. One of the first questions that I asked was whether or not she liked her major and she replied saying that she found it to be very interesting and exciting. Some advice she gave me was to definitely keep up in class, and that a strong background in science was very important. When asked about whether there were any specific majors or minors [...]

// Career-related topic: Accounting Top Ten Ranked Resources: #1: Wikipedia, URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accountancy Description and overview: Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia. People can create an account on Wikipedia and add information to the pages. This allows experts in the fields to compile comprehensive information about a key term or topic. There is a Contents section that allows you to click the section and it will take you right there. Other key terms are written in blue font and provide a link to their descriptive page. Resources are provided at the bottom of the page. Why the resource is a favorite? I have always found Wikipedia to be one of my favorite resources. Although there is question to the validity of its information, it provides detailed definitions, history, and background of topics or terms. I also find it useful that in the description it provides links to other key terms also defined in Wikipedia so that if you are reading a description and want to know more about a term, you can just click it and it goes right there. It also gives good hierarchal structures and diagrams. #2: California Board Of Accountancy, URL: http://www.dca.ca.gov/cba/index.shtml Description and overview: This is the website [...]

// [Thanks to Jeff for sharing his informational interview report regarding a career as an attorney.] For my report I interviewed a partner in a small law firm. I found her when my parents told me that they knew a person that was a lawyer. So then I had a few emails back and forth with her, asking if it would be okay to interview her for a class assignment and general knowledge on a career in law. A few more emails later we agreed on a day to meet and then I went to her office and interviewed her, using the pretty much the questions that were given, for about 30 to 45 minutes. Overall the process of finding and interviewing her was pretty easy because my parents did already know her and she was very willing to meet with me and answer any questions I had. For my report I interviewed a partner in a law firm, a firm that deals mostly with doing business law. Her official job title is an attorney and it was her very first job right out of law school and she has been working their for a little over 24 years. Her [...]

// [Thanks to Debbie for sharing this informational interview report on being a creative director for a television broadcasting company.] The person that I interviewed for this information interview report is my father. He is a creative director of a television broadcasting company. Although his career is totally unrelated to my major, psychology, I’ve always wanted to know more about his career, as I think his career is very interesting and mysterious. Yet, ever since I was little, my father seldom talked about his job. When I asked him if I could interview him about his job this time, surprisingly, he said yes immediately. As this is my first time interviewing another person about their career, I have used the list of sample informational interview questions. Below is the interview: 1. What is your job title and what is the name of the company/organization? My job title is Creative Director, and my company name is [a television broadcasting company]. 2. What are your responsibilities? I have a lot of responsibilities. They are administrative works, like directing writers and creative teams, giving directions, thinking about the program formats, doing presentations, and having meetings with the sponsors about the sales sponsor programs, [...]

// [Thanks to Carri for sharing this informational interview report on being a human resource manager.] When I took the Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessments, one of the options that matched my interests and personality was human resources. I never thought of being in the human resource field. But as I thought about it more and looked online into the field, I became more interested in it. I decided to interview my own human resource manager at my job in sales at a high end department store. She is a very busy lady, so when she walked by one day I asked her if she had a moment to speak with me. I explained to her how this interview with her would help me learn more about her career and help me see if I am interested in this field as well. She agreed and scheduled me into her planner for a 30-minute interview. Interview Question (Q): What is your job title and name of company? Answer (A): Human Resource Manager for [high end department store]. Q: How long have you been doing this job? A: About 4 years. Q: How did you get into this [...]

Answer (A): My job title is Design Manager at [an electronics corporation]. Q: What are your responsibilities? A: My responsibilities are designing and managing. I do project management for many projects. The longer that you work, you have less designing work and more management work. I deal with a lot of consultants, so I also have to review their work as a part of my job. Q: Were there any moments in school when you thought “engineering isn’t for me?” If so, what made you stick with engineering? A: I never thought that engineering wasn’t for me. I did think that maybe my engineering discipline wasn’t the right one. I stuck with it because it was quicker to graduate to just keep the same discipline. Q: What skills are required for your job? A: I need to know how to use all kinds of SPICE programs. I also need to know how to analyze and simulate data and at the same time I have to have a strong analog and [...]

// [Thanks to Melissa for sharing her informational interview report on majoring in child development.] The person I chose to interview was my cousin. She is 22 and just graduated from a university in South Carolina with a major in child development. We have always been similar and shared the same interests, including our major. I Facebook messaged her and we set up a time to message over the computer when she got home from her job working at an elementary school. When I asked her how she knew what she wanted to do she said she had always enjoyed working with kids and knew she could do that for a long time in her future and not be tired of it. She, like me, had always been with the kids in the family whenever we got together for parties or dinners. We both have a natural talent with working with kids and connect with them easily. She said patience is a huge thing to have in this type of work and that it is challenging at times to stay calm. We then spoke about different jobs in that field of study. I told her I didn’t want to be [...]
